FM NIRMALA SITHARAMAN IN THE FORBES’ LIST OF 100 MOST POWERFUL WOMEN IN THE WORLD



Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave another reason to be proud of India’s daughter. She secured 41st position in the Forbes’ global ranking of 100 most powerful women in the world. Adding to India’s glory is the presence of three other Indian women in the list. The CEO and Executive Director of HCL Corporation Roshni Nadar Malhotra stood at the 55th position while Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw grabbed the 68th position. Renuka Jagtiani, the chairperson of Landmark Group secured the 98th position.

Nirmala Sitharaman is India’s first full-time female Finance Minister

Nirmala Sitharaman took over as India’s finance minister in May 2019. She is also in charge of the Minister for Corporate Affairs. Nirmala Sitaraman had earlier created history by becoming the country’s first full-time female finance minister.

The 17th annual Forbes Power List include women from 30 nationalities who were born across four different generations. “There are 10 heads of state, 38 CEOs and five entertainers among them. But where they differ in age, nationality and job description, they are united in the ways they have been using their platforms to address the unique challenges of 2020,” Forbes said.

Angela Merkel bagged 1st position for the 10th straight year

For the 10th straight year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel took the No. 1 spot, with the head of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, coming in second for the second year in a row. For the first time, US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris made it to the list, debuting in the No. 3 spot.

Harris also became the first woman, first black-American and first-ever Asian American to reach the powerful position of the Vice President of the USA.

This year has brought about a change in the functioning of our society as well. There are 17 newcomers that have made it to the list, demonstrating that women are “leading all aspects of a society transformed by a global pandemic”.
