Indian Premier League prominently known as IPL is the biggest domestic cricket league having Global status. IPL was conceptualized after India’s historic triumph in the maiden ICC WT20 in 2007. What began as a lofty goal 14 years ago is now widely regarded as the best T20 tournament in the world. The league was founded in 2008 with eight franchises. Since then, the IPL has drawn some of the best cricketers across the world.

After making a breakthrough in the IPL, players like Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Ravichandran Ashwin have all turned out to be the superstars for the Indian cricket team. The power champions, Mumbai Indians have won the title 5 times, whereas the defending champion, Whistle Podu CSK has won the cup 4 times respectively. IPL 2022 will be the 15th edition of India’s premier T20 league.

It’s already March, and the much-anticipated IPL 2022 is just around the corner! Here are some of the most recent updates from this year’s tournament. In this article, we will tell you about all the changes IPL 2022 will witness.

All about IPL 2022!

The IPL is back and poised to make a splash once again. Soon, cricket fans will be entertained by the IPL 2022. The IPL 2022 season will begin on March 26. The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will run for more than two months, with the final slated for May 29. There will be 74 matches in the IPL 2022, including the playoffs and finals. The ten teams will compete in a total of 70 league matches.

IPL 2022 Venue

All league stage matches will be held at four different locations in Mumbai and Pune. The three Mumbai venues where league matches would be played are Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, and DY Patil Stadium. The fourth location is Pune’s MCA International Stadium. The venue for the playoffs and final will be decided later by the BCCI.

Wankhede and DY Patil Stadiums will each host 20 matches, while Brabourne and MCA International Stadiums will each host 15 games. Each team will play four matches at Wankhede and DY Patil Stadiums, as well as three matches each at Brabourne and MCA International Stadiums.

The new format of IPL 2022

The league stages of the upcoming edition will be conducted in a new format. All of the 10 teams are divided into two virtual groups. Each team will play 14 games in the league stages under the new format. They will play two games against the other four teams in their own group, one game each against four teams from the other group, and two games against one remaining team of the other group.

IPL 2022 Virtual Groups

Seedings were assigned based on team performance in the previous season. The two groups for IPL 2022 are-
Group A- Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants.
Group B- Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans.


IPL 2022 Auction

Each of the ten teams has selected their best players for the tournament. The IPL 2022 auction was held in Bengaluru last month, and all ten franchises were able to get their desired players. During the auction, the 10 franchises selected a total of 204 players. There were 67 international players and 137 Indian players among them.


In the IPL 2022 auction, Ishan Kishan was the most expensive player. During the auction, the Mumbai Indians paid Rs. 15.25 crores for the wicketkeeper-batter, bringing him back to the team. Whereas, Deepak Chahar at Rs. 14 crores, Shreyas Iyer at Rs. 12.25 crores, and Liam Livingstone, priced at Rs. 11.5 crores were among the top big picks during the auction.

End of an era: Virat and Dhoni stepped down from Captaincy in IPL 2022

Leaving many in tears, the two leading captain, Virat Kohli and M S Dhoni has stepped down from the captaincy. The News came few days ahead of the beginning of IPL 2022 that MS Dhoni has handed over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja for the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings. Whereas, few months back Kohli has also backed aside as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the upcoming season, handing over the responsibilities on the shoulders of the former CSK player Faf du Plessis.

IPL 2022 welcomed two new teams

The 15th edition of the IPL is all set to welcome the two new teams this season. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants will be the two new franchises in the upcoming IPL season. The Lucknow Super Giants have bought three draught picks ahead of the auction: KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, and Ravi Bishnoi. The team selected 18 players during the auction. KL Rahul will captain the team in the IPL 2022.

Whereas, on the other hand, in the IPL 2022, Hardik Pandya will lead the other new franchise, Gujarat Titans. The franchise selected Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Shubman Gill ahead of the IPL auction in 2022. Gujarat Titans purchased 20 players during the auction. Key players acquired during the auction include Jason Roy, Rahul Tewatia, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, David Miller, and Alzarri Joseph.

TATA Group is all set to sponsor the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League; Thus naming this season as, TATA IPL 2022. For the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Indian Premier League, the Tata Group has taken over as title sponsor from Vivo. When Vivo decided to discontinue its deal, which was set to expire in 2023, the reputable Tata Company stepped in, extending its affiliation with Indian sport from tennis and badminton to cricket.

IPL has given many uncapped heroes to the Indian cricket teams. Several players have emerged from IPL to become the top edge stars during international matches. In this season also, there will be a number of uncapped players showing their power and emerging magnificently.
