COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2022: MIRABAI CHANU CLINCHES GOLD AT SINGAPORE, QUALIFIES FOR 2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Indian weightlifting ace, Mirabai Chanu, has qualified for the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) after winning gold in the 55kg weight category at the Singapore Weightlifting International. Despite the fact that this was her first time competing in the 55kg weight class, she lifted 191 kg (86kg+105kg) to win in an uncompetitive field. Whereas, Jessica Sewastenko of Australia came in second, lifting 167kg (77kg 90kg), a whole 24kg less than Chanu.

Accomplishments of Chanu

Since 2014, Chanu has competed in international tournaments in the 48 kg weight class, winning the World Championships and numerous gold in the Commonwealth Games. For her efforts in sports in 2018, she also received the Padma Shri award and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from the government. Last year, the Manipuri athlete became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Commonwealth Games

The Chanu has also qualified for the Commonwealth Games in the 49kg weight category, according to her Commonwealth rankings. She is also expected to compete in a new 55kg weight class to help India’s chances of capturing additional gold medals at the Common Wealth Games.

Singapore Weightlifting International

After winning medals at the Singapore Weightlifting International, twelve weightlifters qualified for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Birmingham this year. Mirabai Chanu (women’s 55kg), Bindyarani Devi (women’s 59kg), Vikas Thakur, Ragala Venkat Rahul (both men’s 96kg), and others are among those competing.
