BCCI PROPOSES IPL FOR 6 WOMEN’S TEAMS FROM 2023, CURRENT FRANCHISES WILL GET PREFERENCE

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed a six-team Women’s IPL starting next year
  • The board has only hosted the Women’s T20 Challenge in recent years

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed a six-team Women’s IPL starting next year, in a game-changing move. The board has only hosted the Women’s T20 Challenge in recent years, an event that will also be held during the Men’s IPL this year. However, a full-fledged IPL for women’s cricket has long been desired.

BCCI to create the WIPL

Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have both revealed intentions for a three-team Women’s CPL to run alongside the Men’s CPL. As a result, with the WBBL, England’s Women’s
T20 League, and even the Hundred giving their cricketers exposure, the pressure was on the BCCI to create the WIPL, and the board appears to be moving in the right direction currently.

The Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) is a significant deal for Indian cricket

Team India is currently competing in the ICC Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, where they are vying for a place among the top four teams. The team lost close matches against elite teams like Australia and England several times in the build-up to the huge event because they couldn’t adapt to pressure conditions. It all boiled down to India’s lack of a Women’s IPL, where close games would occur frequently and the players would become accustomed to it.
