Priti Sudan, a retired IAS officer from the 1983 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). She will officially assume her duties on August 1. Prior to this appointment, she has been a member of the UPSC since 2022. Her appointment comes at a time when the Commission’s reputation is under scrutiny due to the controversy involving trainee IAS officer Pooja Khedkar.
A Career Spanning Multiple Ministries
Priti Sudan’s illustrious career includes serving as the Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with her tenure ending in July 2020. She has also worked in the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Defence, and has held responsibilities in Andhra Pradesh for finance, planning, disaster management, tourism, and agriculture. In addition to her governmental roles, she has served as an advisor to the World Bank.

Key Contributions to National Programs
The introduction of important national initiatives like “Ayushman Bharat” and “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” was greatly aided by Priti Sudan. Her efforts also extended to the creation of the National Medical Commission, the Allied and Healthcare Professions Commission, and legislation related to the prohibition of e-cigarettes. Her leadership and contributions have been pivotal in shaping policies aimed at improving public health and social welfare in India.
