World Meteorological Day is observed every year on March 23. Since 1961, the World Meteorological Organization has celebrated World Meteorological Day, with a new theme chosen each year.

The theme of this year’s World Meteorological Day, which falls on March 23, is ‘Early Warning and Early Action,’ emphasising the crucial importance of hydrometeorological and climate data in catastrophe risk reduction.

HISTORY OF THE WORLD METEOROLOGICAL DAY 2022

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which now includes 193 member countries and territories, was founded on this day in 1945.

The organisation was founded by the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), whose concept dates back to the Vienna International Meteorological Congress of 1873.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was established as a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN) in 1951, following the approval of the WMO treaty in 1950. The headquarters of the World 
Meteorological Organization are in Geneva, Switzerland.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE WORLD METEOROLOGICAL DAY 2022

National Meteorological Day is honoured all around the world as a reminder of meteorologists’ critical role in ensuring public safety and well-being.
We want to raise awareness about the many challenges that our planet is facing now all across the world. The day is not an official holiday anywhere on the earth, but it is a worldwide celebration.
