Varanasi, July 2023 – IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has joined forces with ‘Vidya Shakti’ to provide access to education in remote areas of Uttar Pradesh through innovative Online Classes and Virtual Reality (VR) technology. With the successful implementation of this initiative in 100 villages of the Varanasi District, students in classes 6th to 8th are benefiting from interactive sessions conducted in Hindi Medium.
Aim of the initiative
The primary objective of this initiative is to address the knowledge gap exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly between urban and rural students. The classes offered focus on language fundamentals, mathematics, and science subjects, providing a strong foundation for students in these crucial areas.
Enhancing Learning through Technological Integration
By embracing various technologies, student retention levels have significantly increased. STEM teachers utilize VR headsets, allowing students to ‘experience’ educational content and immerse themselves in sensor-activated environments. Short 3D videos are utilized for science and math concepts, making visualization sessions engaging and interactive. Question-and-answer sessions further enhance student participation, resulting in a memorable learning experience.
Partners in Education
IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation serves as the Technology Innovation Hub of IIT Madras, functioning as a Section 8 not-for-profit Company funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. ‘Vidya Shakti,’ an initiative of OpenMentor, has been dedicated to online education and skilling of students since 2009. It offers online courses in industry-relevant software skills, recorded sessions, and online exams for self-evaluation.
Unique Aspects of the Vidya Shakti Initiative
1. Live Online Classes in Native Language: The initiative ensures that students receive instruction in their native language, promoting better understanding and engagement.
2. Teaching at a Deliberate Pace: The classes adopt a slower pace, allowing students to grasp concepts thoroughly without feeling rushed, thereby facilitating effective learning.
3. Use of Simulation Software for Experiments: Simulation software is employed to demonstrate scientific experiments, enabling students to visualize and understand complex concepts more effectively.
4. Daily Aptitude Questions for Future Readiness: The inclusion of aptitude questions in daily sessions equips students with essential skills for future academic and professional endeavours.
Impact and Benefits
The Vidya Shakti initiative has the potential to significantly impact education in rural areas. By utilizing VR technology and online classes, it bridges the gap between urban and rural education, providing equal opportunities for students. The interactive and immersive learning experience fosters better comprehension and retention of subjects, empowering students to pursue higher education and achieve their full potential.
Moving Forward
The success of this initiative in Tamil Nadu has inspired its expansion to other states. By establishing rural interaction centres (RIC) under the Vidya Shakti project, IIT Madras and its partner organizations aim to improve the Gross Enrolment Ratio across the country, supporting the vital social goal of increasing access to education.
In conclusion, the collaboration between IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation and Vidya Shakti brings education to remote villages in Varanasi through the innovative use of online classes and VR technology. With a focus on fundamentals and a commitment to equal access, this initiative has the potential to transform education in rural Uttar Pradesh, empowering students and bridging the educational divide.
