A women breaking the stereotypes, turned her passion for driving into career

Driving trucks is traditionally considered a man’s job, but Joycy Lyngdoh of Meghalaya is challenging stereotypes. She holds the distinction of being India’s first female truck driver for an Amazon trucking partner. “My advice to women who want to pursue a career in driving is that if you believe in yourself, new opportunities will present themselves; just go for it.” You will face obstacles, but where there is a will, there is a way,” the 35-year-old says.

A seasoned professional with over 6 years of experience, Joycy dared to turn her passion for driving into a career. Today, she cannot imagine herself doing anything else. Her journey has motivated many more female drivers in her community. “I love being out on the road traveling to different places and meeting new people. This opportunity inspired me to pursue my passion and live a self-sufficient life,” says Joycy.

Sole bread earner

She has been the sole bread earner for her family, supporting her mother and three sisters. Joycy worked in several companies in Guwahati after finishing her education, including a steel company and as a store manager at a local shop, to make ends meet.

She eventually learned to drive with help from her friends. The first break she got was to drive a school bus. Her passion for the road made her take up temporary driving opportunities across the city and eventually enroll with an Amazon trucking partner where she been working for the past one year. Joycy was quick to orient herself with Amazon’s operational guidelines for reliable deliveries in and around Guwahati.

500 trucking partners

Amazon has partnered with over 500 trucking partners in India to ensure that customer packages are delivered on time, reliably, and safely across the country.
“Joyce has successfully participated in these programs and serves as a great example for all those who are looking for new opportunities in the logistics field. People like her are driving the principle of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, and we are proud to be empowering them,” said Tiwari.

The company facilitates the trucking partners to secure health and accident insurance benefits for drivers like Joycy, by engaging directly with Amazon’s preferred insurance providers. Further, it has enabled drivers through technology-driven solutions for safe driving and to move packages efficiently by guiding them on navigation, on-time movement and reporting of delays and disruptions.
