Apple plans to discontinue the iPhone’s Lightning port and replace it with a Type-C port in the coming year (2023). According to a top Apple analyst, the device will receive a universally accepted port, making it easy to use anywhere. Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, stated in a recent tweet that the new iPhones will include a USB-C port.
In the tweet, Kuo stated: “According to my most recent survey, the new iPhone will abandon the Lightning port in 2H23 (the second half of 2023) and instead use a USB-C port.
In hardware designs, USB-C could improve iPhone transfer and charging speeds, but final spec details are still dependent on iOS support.”
In September 2012, Apple introduced the Lightning port standard
Phil Schiller, Apple Fellow in charge of the App Store and Apple Events, described it as “a modern connector for the next decade.” According to Kuo, the existing USB-C-related suppliers of Apple’s ecosystem (e.g.,
IC controller, connector) are expected to become the market’s focus in the next 1-2 years, “due to vast orders from iPhones and accessories’ adoption of USB-C ports.”
The reversible USB-C standard has been adopted by the global smartphone market.
Apple recently added the C-Type USB port to its newly released iPads, and the tech giant is also using USB-C-compatible Thunderbolt ports on many Mac devices.
