UNSC COUNTER TERRORISM COMMITTEE TO BE CHAIRED BY INDIA IN JANUARY 2022

 Why is India and UNSC in news?

After a long wait of almost a decade in January 2022, India will chair the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) Counter-Terrorism Committee. This committee was last led by India in 2011-12.
Know about UN Security Council

In September 2001 the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee was established, shortly after the devastating 9/11 terrorist attack, to map and figure out a strategy for combating terrorism.
On January 8, 2021 Ambassador TS Tirumurti who is India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that India will head three key UN Security Council committees in 2021-22, including three other committee, the Counterterrorism Committee, the Taliban Sanctions Committee, and the Libyan Sanctions Committee.

Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC)

  •  Following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, the UN Security Council established the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) by a resolution that was unanimously accepted on September 28, 2001.
  • The Committee is made up of all 15 members of the United Nations Security Council. The committee’s main responsibility is to monitor the implementation of Resolution 1373 (2001), which asked countries to initiate several steps to enhance their legal and institutional capacity to combat terrorist activities at home, in their regions, and around the world, as well as other resolutions.
  • The 1373 resolution further urges states to join the appropriate international counter-terrorism legal mechanisms as soon as possible.
  • The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Tunisia to the United Nations H.E. Mr. Tarek Ladeb, is the current chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee.

Executive Directorate of the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTED)

The UN Security Council established the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) to support the counter-terrorism committee and oversee the monitoring of resolution 1373’s implementation (2001).

Significance

In the same year that it celebrates its 75th anniversary of independence, India will head the Counter-Terrorism Committee. As one of the most prominent victims of terrorism, India has been at the forefront of the fight against it, particularly cross-border terrorism.
