Adoption means providing someone with a new life and another reason to live. Generally, when we hear the term ‘adoption’, the first thing that strikes our mind is children! No one ever thinks of adopting needy senior citizens. But today we are going to read something different than this. A pathologist from Gujarat is on a mission to ‘Adopt the parents’. The initiative aims to form a caring community that allows senior citizens to live with dignity.

Mission to adopt parents

According to a report, the campaign was started by a Gujarat pathologist. The campaign is called “Adopt a Parent”. A few days back, an advertisement surfaced on social media seeking to adopt the parents. The campaign being very unique and one of its kind, grabbed the attention of the netizens. As a result, the advertisement became an overnight sensation. The advertisement of Dilip Amalani, a 55-year-old pathologist from Jamnagar, has made around 800 senior citizens a part of a loving community that allows them to live a decent and dignified life.

Initiative to provide shelter to the needy senior citizens

Amalani’s efforts have resulted in providing shelter to approximately 2,000 senior citizens in various old age homes throughout Gujarat. In Kandivali, Mumbai, he has also established a center that houses approximately 100 elderly couples.

How does the mission start?

Amalani said that he got the idea to help senior citizens, particularly the sick, three years ago. “I didn’t have any of my own children,” Amalani explained. I had intended to adopt a child, but life got in the way and time passed. A few years ago, a thought got stuck in my mind that everyone intends to adopt children, but no one ever thinks of the elders who also need our love and care.”

He further said, ”we decided to do something for senior citizens who were unable to walk or wet themselves at night due to age-related diseases.” We circulated a message in internal groups asking for assistance in establishing a center for such elders. Several people offered donations, and eventually, we established our first center in Kandivali,” he added.

Circulated advertisement over the social media

A desire to expedite his efforts led to the social media advertisement, ‘Maa Baap Joiye Chhe (Need Parents)’.”I received a flood of calls from people pleading with me to take in their elderly parents.” We began admitting senior citizens who were ill and had children who were struggling to care for them. “This way, the children could visit their parents more frequently, and the elders would receive the assistance they required,” he explained.
