HIGHLIGHTS:

According to the government, India has around 50,000 ODF villages. The country has reached the milestone of 50,000 open defecation-free (ODF) Plus communities.

Overview:

• Telangana is the best-performing state in this initiative, with 13,960 ODF Plus villages. Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh come in second and third, respectively.
• The Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen Phase-II was initiated in 2020 with the goal of achieving ODF Plus status for all villages across the country by the end of 2024.
• The GOBARdhan Scheme, biodegradable waste management, plastic waste management, grey water management, and faecal sludge management are all part of the ODF Plus mission, according to the Jal 

Shakti ministry.

• The ODF Plus communities have been classified into three groups. Rising, Aspiring, and Model are the three categories that show how far they’ve come.
• The ODF Plus villages initiative has created a competitive and healthy spirit among the people, encouraging them to participate in the rapid implementation of “sampoorn swachhata.”
• Over one crore individuals from around 22,000 gramme panchayats have participated in various sanitation initiatives as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Grameen Phase-II of the Swachh Bharat Mission

The implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen Phase-II programme was approved by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in February 2020. The achievement of Phase I is prioritised in this initiative, and enough Solid, Liquid, and Plastic Waste Management (SLWM) facilities are provided throughout rural India. This initiative will be implemented from 2020-21 to 2024-25, with a budget of Rs. 1,40,881 crores.
