Lalithamba BV, a social activist and HSR Layout resident who is the perfect solution to the question, “Can one individual make a difference?”
She decided to encourage the use of aerators in public areas after seeing water spilling out of taps in schools and going to waste.
Aerators, also known as flow regulators, reduce the amount of water that passes through the tap by simply mixing air into the flow.
She has installed 80 aerators in six schools, 15 in two hotels, 13 in one marriage hall, two in a public restroom, and one at a police station in the last month.
The aerators were able to reduce water flow from 8 liters per minute to 3 liters per minute depending on the type of tap.
“I began with a government school in the region that has 300-500 pupils who wash their hands at taps.
Utensils can also be cleaned with these taps. Their 1,000-litre tank was formerly refilled twice daily, but after the aerators were installed, it was only refilled once. “I’m aiming for that kind of water conservation,” Lalithamba said.
How much water does it need to wash your hands?
Everything ECO Environ Solutions was created in 2016 by Karunaprasad Kanavi and Shashidhara K with the purpose of conserving water in metropolitan areas. “Even if a tap is left open for two seconds, it wastes 3-4 liters of water.”
“Do we really need that much water to wash our hands?”
“The spray-type installation limits the water flow to 3 liters per minute, which is sufficient for hand washing. “Kitchen sinks are placed with foam-type systems that reduce consumption from 200-250 litres of water in 20 minutes to 100-120 liters,” he added, adding that they had helped more than 60 apartment complexes and big hospitals with water conservation solutions in the previous six years.
The easy adjustments, according to Kanavi, will save a lot of water and cost up to Rs 400-500 for household taps. “During the summer, when tankers are expensive and we have a water deficit, our focus changes to water conservation.” Instead, we must focus on a year-round water conservation lifestyle,” he said.
