COMIC BOOK ‘INDIA’S WOMEN UNSUNG HEROES’ RELEASED BY UNION MINISTER FOR CULTURE-AUTHOR MEENAKSHI LEKHI

It tells the stories of queens who fought against British forces. These women committed their life to the motherland’s cause and laid down their lives for it.

The first series was released

On January 28, 2022, Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi launched the first of the series in Delhi. The first section is devoted to 20 women whose achievements have gone mostly unnoticed.

Among the 20 women are:

  • Rani Abbakka – She was the first Tuluva Queen of Ullal, Rani Abbakka. In the later half of the 16th century, she resisted the Portuguese.
  • Matangini Hazra was a revolutionary from Bengal. She was shot by British Indian police in September 1942.
  • Chakali Ilamma – During the Telangana rebellion, her act of defiance against the local zamindar inspired many people.
  • Parbati Giri is known throughout western Odisha as Mother Teresa. She was a well-known Odisha-based female liberation fighter.
  • Gulab Kaur– She was a freedom warrior who gave up her hopes of living in a foreign country in order to mobilise Indians against the British Raj.
  • Padmaja Naidu was a liberation warrior and the daughter of Sarojini Naidu. Later, she was elected Governor of West Bengal.
  • Bishni Devi Shah — In Uttarakhand, she motivated a significant number of people to join the liberation cause.

The series is now in its second edition

The series’ second edition is now in the works. It will tell the stories of 25 underappreciated tribal independence heroes.

Edition No. 3

The series’ third and final volume will feature the stories of 30 forgotten heroes.
