Street dogs face extreme hardships as they reach their old age. Life on the streets is already tough, but aging brings additional challenges such as chronic illness, physical injury, malnutrition, and failing mobility.
On busy urban roads, older stray dogs frequently struggle to find food or dodge fast-moving traffic. To make matters worse, most overcrowded animal shelters in cities lack the capacity, funding, or specialized space needed to care for aging animals over long periods.
To solve this growing animal welfare crisis, a specialized sanctuary named ‘Ananda’ was created in Maharashtra. Located on a peaceful 0.9-acre green property near the Sahyadri Hills along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, this dedicated retirement home offers aging street animals a safe haven.
Here, senior stray dogs receive life-saving medical treatment, healthy daily meals, peaceful surroundings, and the dignity they deserve during their final years.
The Compassionate Vision Behind Ananda Shelter
The creation of Ananda stems from a deep commitment to animal welfare by Prayas Trust, the philanthropic arm of engineering firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T). Led by Meena Subrahmanyan, President of Prayas Trust, the project was born out of a desire to address a widely overlooked issue in urban animal rescue.
Meena Subrahmanyan strongly believed that genuine empathy must extend to all living beings, especially those who cannot speak for themselves. After seeing the heartbreaking condition of homeless street animals suffering in their old age, she envisioned a permanent sanctuary designed specifically for long-term rehabilitation and retirement.
To turn this vision into reality, former L&T Finance MD & CEO Dinanath Dubhashi and his wife Nishoo Dubhashi stepped forward to manage daily operations and establish high standards of medical care.
World-Class Facilities Designed for Aging Dogs
Unlike basic animal shelters, Ananda is equipped like a modern veterinary hospital built specifically to handle the physical needs of older animals.
- Advanced Medical Equipment: The campus features on-site digital X-ray machines, a sterile operating theater, a biochemistry laboratory for fast blood work, and separate isolation wards for animals recovering from contagious conditions.
- Emergency Rescue Support: A fully equipped veterinary ambulance remains on standby 24/7 to handle emergency rescues and transport sick animals safely.
- Physical Therapy & Hydrotherapy: The sanctuary includes open grassy lawns, shaded gazebos, and a shallow splash pool for hydrotherapy. This gentle water exercise helps older dogs rebuild muscle strength and relieve painful joint arthritis.
- Sustainable Operations: An internal Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and 24-hour solar power backup keep the sanctuary clean, hygienic, and eco-friendly.
Rebuilding Trust and Healing Past Trauma
Ananda currently provides a permanent home for nearly 60 senior dogs. Many of these animals arrive severely traumatized after surviving years of abuse, neglect, or painful injuries on the streets. When they first enter the shelter, they are often terrified of human touch.
A touching example of recovery is Leela, a rescued dog who arrived at the shelter suffering from severe skin infections that left her almost completely hairless. Traumatized by her past, she hid from caregivers.
However, after several months of specialized nutrition, medicated baths, continuous veterinary care, and gentle affection, Leela made a full recovery. Today, she runs freely on the sanctuary lawns, fully trusting the human hands that healed her.
A Model for Future Animal Welfare
‘Ananda’ is far more than just an animal shelter; it represents a compassionate framework for how society ought to treat vulnerable street animals. By providing comprehensive healthcare, safety, and love, this sanctuary ensures that India’s senior stray dogs can spend their remaining years in comfort and dignity.
