INDIA SOON TO BE A SEMI CONDUCTOR HUB!

The government implements various schemes and policies in order to make India a self-reliant nation. For the same, the government has announced new industry-friendly policies to help the country’s semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem development. In order to make India a semi conductor hub the union cabinet has approved a scheme, paving the way for India to become a hub for electronic system design and manufacturing. The government has authorized an ambitious plan of Rs.76,000 crore to address the country’s paucity of semiconductor chips.

Features of the scheme
• Companies that make semiconductors and display fabrication units will receive up to 50% financial aid under the programme. A long-term strategy will also be established by the India Semiconductor Mission.
• For the displays, the government aims to build one to two fab units. It is planned to set up ten separate facilities for component design and manufacture.
• Two display fabrication plants and two semiconductor plants will be built in the next 2-4 years. The government intends to spend between Rs.30 and Rs.50 thousand crores on these projects.
• In the next 5 to 6 years, over 100 semiconductor design, component manufacturing, and display production units will be established in the country under this strategy.

What is chip?
Consider semiconductors to be the brains of electronic devices. All semiconductor chips are used in computers, laptops, vehicles, washing machines, ATMs, healthcare machines, and portable cellphones. This chip functions as a brain for these devices. Without these, every electrical object is incomplete. Semiconductor chips are silicon chips that control the flow of electricity in circuits.

Step towards self-reliant India
We currently import semiconductor materials due to a shortage of domestic production. India imports roughly Rs.1.76 lakh crore at the moment. This import might reach Rs.7.5 lakh crore by 2025, according to estimates. If we start producing semiconductors on our own, then we don’t have to be dependent on other nations for the same. Thus, this step will give a boost to self-reliant India as well as employment and innovation.

Beneficial to boost job opportunities
Due to a lack of semiconductors, the industry is experiencing significant losses. As a result, everything from electrical devices to automobiles has gotten more expensive. The things can become cheaper, if they are created locally.
Thousands of new job opportunities will be created as a result of this programme. Around 85,000 competent engineers are expected to be required to design the semiconductor, according to estimates. Aside from them, jobs will be created for both small and large positions.
