INDIRA GANDHI AWARD: NGO PRATHAM RECEIVES HONOR FOR PROVIDING QUALITY EDUCATION TO UNDERPRIVILEGED

The saying by Nelson Mandela describes the power of education. It is the first step towards one’s success and growth. But not every individual is lucky enough to get the low-hanging fruit. Some of these star-crossed are the children from the weaker section of society.
There are several NGOs that work towards the upliftment of such underprivileged students. One such NGO is ‘Pratham’. This year, the ‘Indira Gandhi Peace, Disarmament, and Development Award’ has been awarded to the social service organization, Pratham. The award has been given for its pioneering work towards the weaker section of society.

Ensures Quality Education
In a statement, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust stated that Pratham Ngo has been chosen by an international jury. The jury was headed by the former chief justice of India, TS Thakur. The social service organization, Pratham has been rewarded for providing quality education to the underprivileged. The NGO has been working for more than 25 years. Pratham ensures every child of the underprivileged receives an adequate education.

Uses Digital technology for providing education
Pratham has been working for several years to uplift the weaker society. Even during the hard times of the lockdown, Pratham continued to provide quality education to the students through new technology. Pratham uses digital technology to ensure every child receives an education. The organization regularly assessed the quality of education.

The journey of Pratham
The NGO was founded in 1995 by Dr. Madhav Chavan and Farida Lambe. The NGO initially started its work from Mumbai Slums. Here they established community-based kindergartens or pre-schools. The NGO has been working to expand the scope of education in India.

Recognizes excellence in education
The Indira Gandhi award recognizes excellence in education for children from underserved communities around the world. Under this award, the beneficiary receives a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh and a citation.
