India G20 Presidency 2023: its idea

India took over the G20 Presidency from Indonesia on December 1st, and will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit for the very first time in the nation in 2023. As a nation deeply committed to democracy and multilateralism, India’s G20 Presidency would be a watershed moment in her history, as it seeks to play an essential role in finding constructive global solutions for the wellbeing of all, and in doing so, embody the true spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ or the ‘World is One Family.”

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union are members of the G20.

The Prime Minister noted the potential for promoting tourism and boosting the regional economy of the places where G20 meetings would be held, emphasising the thousands of visitors who would be heading to India during India’s G20 Presidency.

“India’s G20 Presidency belongs to the entire nation, and it is a unique opportunity to showcase India’s strengths to the entire world,” PM Modi said at the meeting. “There is a global curiosity and attraction towards India, and the G20 Presidency brings great opportunities for tourism and the local economy.”

India`s Plan

● The first priority is to quicken the pace of inclusive and long-term growth.

● The second critical priority is climate action, ensuring that adequate climate financing is provided to emerging markets and developing countries. Climate finance is the key to economic growth.

● The acceleration of technology in various sectors such as education, health, and so on will be another topic of discussion and deliberation.

● Accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals will also be a priority during the presidency. It is critical for the world to grow and expand in an inclusive and equitable way.

● Instead of long-term plans such as 2050 targets, India believes that individual climate change adaptation and mitigation actions must be prioritized. Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) will help in this regard.

The theme of India’s G20 Presidency: ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’

One Earth: Heal the planet by promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyles based on Indian traditions.

One Family: Promote human family harmony by depoliticizing relevant food, fertilizer, and medicine supply chains. This is done to avoid humanitarian crises caused by
geopolitical tension.

On this, our prime minister mentioned “ depoliticise the global supply of food, fertilizers, and medical products so that geo-political tensions do not lead to humanitarian crises”.

One Future: To improve global security, encourage open dialogue among the world’s most powerful nations on critical issues such as climate change and the management of risks posed by weapons of mass destruction.

The theme affirms the worth of all life – human, animal, plant, and microorganism – and their interrelatedness on Earth and throughout the universe.

According to Rajiv Bhatia and Manjeet Kripalani of the Indian think-tank Gateway House, now is the time for India to move from being a “rule-taker to a rule-maker.”

“The country has not made significant investments in multilateral rule-making institutions such as the G20, but it is never too late to begin.”
