Current affairs: From Presidential election to the National Film Awards


Current affairs are an important part of the UPSC Civil Services Examination syllabus. Droupadi Murmu, The First Tribal President of India

Droupadi Murmu won the presidential elections with more than 64 percent of the valid votes cast. She defeated opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha to become India’s 15th president. Murmu will be the first person with a tribal background to be elected president of this country after taking the oath. Murmu, an NDA presidential candidate, was appointed governor of Jharkhand in 2015 and will serve until 2021.

New President of Sri Lanka

After ex-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country amid severe economic collapse, veteran politician Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected as the island nation’s new president. Wickremesinghe took office on July 21. This is the 73-year-old politician’s sixth election to the position. Wickremesinghe was appointed as Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister in May of this year to lead the country out of its worst economic crisis in decades.

PV Sindhu wins the Singapore Open

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, won her first Singapore Open Super 500 title on July 17. She defeated China’s Wang Zhi Yi, the reigning Asian Championships gold medalist, who is 22 years old. Sindhu had a 1-0 lead over her opponent when the match began. The final score following Sindhu’s victory was 21-9 11-21 21-15.

2022 National Film Awards

On July 22, the 68th National Film Awards were announced at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. Suriya for Soorarai Pottru and Ajay Devgn for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior shared the Best Actor award. Aparna Balamurali was named Best Actress, and Manoj Muntashir was named Best Lyrics for Saina. Soorarai Pottru won Best Feature Film, while Malayalam film Ayyappanum Koshiyum, directed by 
Sachidanandan KR, won Best Direction.

Neeraj Chopra becomes second Indian ever to win medal at World Athletics Championships

India’s golden boy Neeraj Chopra won the country’s only second medal at the World Athletics Championships, finishing with a historic silver in the men’s javelin final. Neeraj’s throw of 88.13m in his fourth attempt secured him not only a podium finish but also ended India’s 29-year-long wait for a medal at the World’s after Anju Bobby George’s bronze medal finish in the women’s long jump way back in 2003.
