PV Sindhu, an Indian shuttler scripted history by winning the BWF Super 500 Singapore Open. In the final, Sindhu defeated Chinese shuttler Wang Zhi Yi 21-9, 11-21, and 21-15.

The finalists only met for the second time. Sindhu had previously defeated Wang in the All England Open earlier this year, winning 21-18, 21-13. Sindhu was imperious once more, and she was helped by a few unforced errors from Wang's end to take a 13-2 lead. From then on, finishing the first game was a formality, which Sindhu duly did, winning 21-9 in 12 minutes.

Indian regrouped and stormed through the third game

Wang came back stronger in the second game, taking a 6-0 lead. Despite Sindhu's best efforts, the Chinese chipped away to force a decider in the second game. But, with Sindhu's form behind her, the Indian regrouped and stormed through the third game to win 21-15. Sindhu outran her opponent by combining deft drops with agile movement. Wang, too, let down her guard, making numerous unforced errors throughout the game.

Plenty of praise and applause came in from all parts for Sindhu’s historic victory including India’s prime minister Narendra Modi. The prime minister praised PV Sindhu’s talent and effort. He noted the title win as a proud moment for the country and mentioned that it will inspire a lot of other upcoming players.

Sindhu’s run continues from her bronze medal win in the Tokyo Olympics. She has now won her third title this year along with the Swiss Open and the Syed Modi International. But the Singapore Open is Sindhu’s first Super 500 triumph. Hence, the victory will give her a lot of confidence going into the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
