In a historic moment for the Indian Railways, Jaya Verma Sinha has broken the glass ceiling by becoming the first woman to assume the role of CEO and Chairperson of the Railway Board. She steps into this prestigious position, succeeding Anil Kumar Lahoti.
Jaya Verma Sinha’s journey is a remarkable one. She began her career after graduating from Allahabad University in 1988 when she joined the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS). Currently, she serves as a member of operations and business development within the Railway Board, a vital arm of the railway ministry.

Responsibilities and Expertise

In her role, Sinha oversees the transportation of both freight and passenger services on the vast network of Indian Railways. Her expertise and dedication have been particularly evident in recent times, notably during her explanation of the complex signaling system following the tragic Balasore accident, which claimed the lives of nearly 300 people.

A Trailblazing Tenure

Jaya Verma Sinha officially took charge on September 1, with her term set to extend until August 31, 2024. Her original retirement date is October 1, but she will be re-employed until her tenure concludes.

A Journey of Experience

Sinha’s illustrious career has seen her work in various capacities, including roles within the Northern Railway, SE Railway, and Eastern Railway. She also served as a railway advisor in the high commission of India, Dhaka, Bangladesh, for four years, during which the Maitree Express from Kolkata to Dhaka was inaugurated. Notably, she has also held the position of Divisional Railway Manager, Eastern Railway, Sealdah division.
