Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: Every year on July 26th, India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate the victory of the Indian Armed Forces in the 1999 Kargil War. It is a day etched in the memory of every Indian — a tribute to the extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and patriotism displayed by our soldiers who fought under the harshest conditions to defend the nation’s integrity.
Kargil War: Operation Vijay
The Kargil War, fought between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999, took place in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani soldiers, disguised as militants, infiltrated Indian territory and occupied key heights along the Line of Control (LoC). The Indian Army launched Operation Vijay to reclaim the occupied positions.
Fought at altitudes of 16,000 to 18,000 feet, the war tested the endurance, strength, and resilience of our troops. The terrain was treacherous, and the temperatures were freezing, but the spirit of the Indian soldiers was unbreakable.
Heroes Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice
Captain Vikram Batra (Param Vir Chakra – Posthumous)
Known for his call sign “Shershaah”, Captain Batra became a legend for his fearless leadership during the battle for Point 4875. Despite being under heavy fire, he rescued an injured comrade and led a successful assault. His famous words:
“Yeh Dil Maange More!”
still echo as a symbol of courage. He was martyred while saving a fellow soldier.
Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav (Param Vir Chakra)
At just 19, Yadav volunteered to climb a vertical cliff face to reach the enemy bunkers at Tiger Hill. Even after being hit by multiple bullets, he continued to climb and destroy the bunkers. Miraculously, he survived and was later awarded the highest gallantry award.
Lieutenant Anuj Nayyar (Maha Vir Chakra – Posthumous)
Nayyar led a successful attack on Pimple II post during the war. Despite being outnumbered and heavily fired upon, he destroyed multiple enemy bunkers before being hit by a mortar shell. His bravery helped India recapture a crucial position.
Lives lost but peace won
The war ended with India recapturing all its territory, and over 500 Indian soldiers lost their lives. As we mark Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025, let us pause and reflect. Light a candle, share a story, or simply whisper a silent prayer for the warriors who didn’t return. Let us teach the younger generation not just history, but heroism — for as long as we remember, they live on.
