Harmilan Kaur Bains of Punjab breaks 19-year-old National record. Harmilan embedded this feather to her crown on the second day of the 60th National Open Athletics Championship in the women’s 1500m race. The championship was held in Hanamkonda’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Harleen has been involved in athletics for almost 6 years. Both of her parents are also athletes. Her father, Amandeep Bains is a 1500m medalist. On the other hand, her mother, Madhuri Saxena won 800m silver medal at the Asian Games in 2002.
Harmilan breaks National record
Harmilan kaur, a 23-year-old start-to-finish specialist, established the Asian Games record by breaking 19-year-old record of Sunita Rani, which she set at Busan in 2002. She also broke OP Jaisha’s meet record of 4:11.83 from 2006, which she established in Delhi.
The story of success
Harmilan has gone unbeaten in 8 national-level races since January 2020. She continued to rise from 4:14.68 at last year’s ‘Khelo India’ University Games in Bhubaneshwar to 4:08.70 and 4:08.27 at the Federation Cup and Indian Grand Prix 4 in Patiala, respectively.

Harmilan started her athletics career in 2015. She usually takes part in 800 and 1500m running events. She secured 2nd position by completing the race in 4 minutes 35 seconds in 1500m at Asian Junior Athletics Championships. The Next year, She made her international debut the at the Asian Junior Athletics Championships. Though, she rose to prominence after breaking Sunita Rani’s 19-year-old record at the 60th National Open Athletics Championship.
