iPhone 14: “Feels like living, Elastic bubble,” says dynamic island designer

Apple introduces a new pill-shaped cutout called Dynamic Island with the release of the new iPhone 14 pro models. During its ‘Far Out’ event on September 7, the tech titan made extensive mention of the new cutout. This is most likely the coolest way to conceal the ‘i-shaped’ camera and face-id cutout.

Aside from simply masking the cutout, the ‘Dynamic Island’ goes a step further by providing more, true functionality. Apple Human Interface designer Chan Karunamuni, who is working on Dynamic Island, took to Twitter to express his thoughts and excitement about the positive response to his creation.

“Dynamic Island definitely wasn’t a solo effort. The industrial design, hardware, and software teams all worked in concert to design and build it. We worked together in an intensely collaborative process over years to make it happen, the only way to make an idea like this possible.” he said.

The Dynamic Island, a new project I designed, arrived today. Its goal is to feel like a living, elastic bubble capable of morphing into various alerts and experiences.

According to MacRumors, the feature can show system alerts for things like incoming phone calls and the Face ID authentication prompt, and it will also work with Live Activities in third-party apps when iOS 16.1 is released later in 2022.

Because the feature is new, software integration is currently limited to a few apps.
