UPLIFTING WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN SPORTS LED “WOMAN OF THE YEAR” AWARD TO INDIAN ATHLETE ANJU BOBBY GEORGE


Many sport enthusiasts came forward to rescue the gender inequality in sports. One such star is Anju Bobby George. Anju has come up every time and raised her voice against the gender inequality in sports. She is also being known for uplifting the women participation in sports. This year the World Athletics has accorded sprinter Anju Bobby George as ‘Woman of the Year’.


Anju Bobby is one of India’s most illustrious track and field athletes. The 44-year-old Indian Sprinter has represented India at various events across the world. She has been awarded the prestigious honor for her continuous efforts in advancing sports in the country. Also, she has been awarded for acting as a constant voice for gender quality.

Awarded in a Virtual ceremony
Anju received the award in a virtual ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by marathon legend Paula Radcliffe and long jump star Jazmin Sawyers. It was live streamed on the World Athletics YouTube channel and Face book page.

Fought For Gender Equality
Anju raised her voice for gender equality as the Senior Vice President of the Indian Athletics Federation. Anju Bobby also mentors schoolgirls for future leadership positions in sports. Anju founded a training academy in 2016 for young girls. The academy has already produced many Under-20 medalists.

Accomplishments of Anju Bobby


Anju Bobby George began her professional career in 1996. She earned India’s first gold medal in the long jump event at the Asian Games at Busan in 2002. Anju was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2003 and the Padma Shri a year later. In 2004, she received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award. Anju was honored by the BBC with a Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year.

Worthy Recipient Of The Award
The world athletics congratulated the Indian sprinter Anju and said” Congratulations to @anjubobbygeorg1 on being crowned this year’s Woman of the Year at the #WorldAthleticsAwards. Her efforts in advancing the sport in India as well as inspiring more women to follow in her footsteps make her more than a worthy recipient of this year’s award”.
