Special Olympics Bharat Athletes Gear Up for Berlin Games 2023


In an exciting development, Special Olympics Bharat athletes are preparing themselves for the much-anticipated Berlin Games 2023. A National Coaching Camp, supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India, is currently underway at the Amity University in NOIDA, India. Over 380 campers, including 177 special athletes from 23 states, are participating in 15 different sports, honing their skills and getting ready to represent their country on a global stage.

Athletes from Across India Unite for Intensive Training

During the announcement of the delegation’s strength, distinguished guests such as Padma Shri Rani Rampal, former Captain of the Indian Hockey Team, and Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Member of Parliament, expressed their support and enthusiasm for the athletes. Dr. Mallika Nadda, Chairperson of Special Olympics Bharat, highlighted the opportunity the World Games provide for athletes to showcase ability, positivity, and confidence while promoting diversity and inclusion.

The camp aims to provide comprehensive training sessions, including coaches’ briefings and athlete training, to ensure a holistic experience. The athletes have access to top-notch facilities at Amity University, which will undoubtedly boost their confidence and motivation to achieve their best results. In addition, medical screenings, including oral health screenings, are being conducted to ensure the athletes’ overall well-being and enhance their quality of life.

Padma Shri Rani Rampal, an esteemed member of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team, conveyed her best wishes to the athletes, recognizing the power of sports to bring people together and break down barriers. She commended the efforts of Special Olympics Bharat and Amity University in providing the athletes with exceptional facilities and expressed her confidence in the Indian contingent’s ability to bring honor to their country.

Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder of Amity University, emphasized the institution’s commitment to supporting differently-abled individuals and creating platforms for them to showcase their talents. He commended the athletes’ dedication and wished them success in the upcoming Berlin Games, hoping that they would bring home numerous medals.

From June 17 to 25, 2023, Berlin, Germany, will welcome over 7,000 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners from nearly 190 countries. The Indian contingent, consisting of 202 athletes and partners and 59 coaches, is gearing up to compete in 16 different sports. The Special Olympics World Games are not just about sports; they are a unique opportunity for individuals with and without disabilities to come together, transcend boundaries, and challenge stereotypes through the power of sport.
