With each passing edition, the number of Indian athletes participating in the Summer Olympics has steadily increased. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, India sent its largest contingent yet, with 124 athletes competing. This team brought home seven medals, including Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold in the men’s javelin throw. For Paris 2024, India aims to surpass these achievements with more athletes qualifying and an increased medal tally.
Shooting Success
Indian shooters have secured quotas in every Olympic shooting category for the first time. Bhowneesh Mendiratta earned India’s first Paris 2024 quota at the 2022 ISSF World Championships. However, he didn’t make the final team after national trials, and Prithviraj Tondaiman was awarded the quota in the men’s trap event instead.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) also made strategic decisions, exchanging one pistol quota for a women’s trap shooter. Manu Bhaker’s performance in the national trials for the women’s 10m air pistol and 25m pistol events freed up a quota, allowing Shreyasi Singh to compete in the women’s trap event.
Despite obtaining quotas, several shooters like Rudrankksh Patil (men’s 10m air rifle), Tilottama Sen, Akhil Sheoran, Mehuli Ghosh, Shriyanka Sadangi, Varun Tomar, and Palak Gulia did not make the final team after national trials.
Wrestling and Other Sports
In sports such as shooting and wrestling, quotas are awarded to countries rather than individual athletes. This means the athletes who initially secure the quotas may be replaced leading up to the Games. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) hold the exclusive authority to select athletes for the Olympic Games.
Athletics Achievements
Race walkers Priyanka Goswami and Akshdeep Singh were the first Indian athletes to qualify for athletics events at Paris 2024. In the men’s 20km race walk, four Indians met the qualifying standard, but only three—Akshdeep Singh, Vikash Singh, and Paramjeet Singh Bisht—were selected, with Ram Baboo and Suraj Panwar missing out.
Priyanka and Akshdeep also secured a quota for India in the marathon race walk mixed relay event, with Suraj Panwar partnering Priyanka in Paris.
India reclaimed the women’s 57kg boxing quota via Jaismine Lamboria at the Olympic qualifiers in Bangkok. This came after original quota-holder Parveen Hooda, who earned the spot at the 2023 Asian Games, was suspended for whereabouts failures.
In badminton, players can qualify based on rankings, and NOCs must confirm their participation.
Achieving entry standards or securing quotas is just one part of the Olympic qualification process. Ultimately, NOCs have the final say on athlete selection for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. As we approach the Games, anticipation and excitement continue to build around India’s potential to achieve even greater success on the global stage.
Here is a comprehensive list of all the Indians who have booked a spot for Paris 2024 so far.
