In a sensational and tension-filled finale on 4th July, Team India etched its name in history by claiming a record ninth SAFF Championship title after a scintillating penalty shootout victory against Kuwait in Bengaluru. The match had fans on the edge of their seats as both teams battled valiantly, ultimately ending the regulation time with a 1-1 deadlock.
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s Heroics Seal India’s Win
The intensity soared in the penalty shootout, and even after five rounds, the score remained level at 4-4. As sudden-death loomed, India’s Mahesh Naorem found the back of the net, igniting euphoria among the Indian fans. The real moment of glory came when India’s goalkeeper, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, made a remarkable save from Kuwait’s Khaled Hajiah, sealing a thrilling 5-4 win for India.
Kuwait’s Shabaib Al Khaldi opened the scoring in the 14th minute, putting India on the back foot. However, India’s dynamic forward, Lallianzuala Chhangte, soon found the equalizer in the 39th minute with a clinical finish. Chhangte’s outstanding performance throughout the match earned him the prestigious AIFF Men’s Player of the Year award.
As the match entered extra time, the intensity only intensified. Both India and Kuwait pushed relentlessly for the elusive winner, resulting in injuries, yellow cards, and numerous close calls. However, neither side could find the decisive goal, leading to a heart-pounding penalty shootout to determine the champion.
India’s Redemption in Penalty Shootouts
This remarkable triumph marks the second time India secured victory in a penalty shootout during the tournament, highlighting their mental fortitude. Under the leadership of captain Sunil Chhetri, India displayed nerves of steel in both the semifinal against Lebanon and the final against Kuwait, showcasing their prowess in the art of penalty shootouts.
Although Kuwait narrowly missed out on the championship title, their spirited display throughout the tournament earned them admiration and respect. Their attacking flair and relentless pursuit of goals made them worthy finalists in this captivating SAFF Championship edition.
