Championships (Badminton Asia Championships 2023), ending a wait of 58 years in Dubai. This pair had won the bronze medal in the World Championship 2022. In this championship, the pair of Satwik and Chirag lost the first game but they did not give up and made a great comeback to win the gold by defeating Malaysia’s Ong Yew Sin and Teo E Yee 16-21, 21-17, 21-19.
Victory after 58 years
India got gold in this championship after 58 years. Earlier in 1965, Dinesh Khanna won the first gold medal for India by defeating Thailand’s Sangob Rattanusorn in the men’s singles final in Lucknow. After this, India did not get gold in this championship. In 1971, the pair of Dipu Ghosh and Raman Ghosh won the bronze medal in this championship.
Satwik and Chirag, who won the Swiss Open Super 300 title in Basel, did not lose heart despite losing the first game and came back after trailing 7-13 in the second game and 11-15 in the third game. This is the second title of this season for this pair. He had won five career titles at the Commonwealth Games and the BWF Tour 2022.
After this historic victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the players by tweeting. Congratulating the players on his official Twitter handle, the PM wrote that he is proud of Satwik and Chirag Shetty, who created history at the Badminton Asia Championships by winning the men’s doubles title for the first time.
