Asian Championships: Indian Men’s Squash team won 1st ever gold



On November 4, the Indian men’s team won their first ever gold medal at the Asian Squash Team Championships. They won the 2022 Asian Squash Team Championships in Cheongju, South Korea, by defeating Kuwait in straight sets in the final. Saurav Ghoshal and Ramit Tandon won their games in the final to hand Kuwait a 2-0 defeat. Ramit won 3-0 against Ali Aramezi (11-5, 11-7, 11-4) in the first game, and Saurav won 3-0 against Ammar Altamimi in the second (11-9, 11-2, 11-3). The championships were won without breaking a sweat by Abhay Singh of India and Falah Mohammad of Pakistan.

Women team settled for bronze

On the other hand, the women’s team settled with a bronze medal after losing to Malaysia in the semi-finals with a score of 1-2. This was their 5th third-placed finish in the tournament, the first dating back to 1990 when the event was held in Kolkata, India.

Earlier, the Indian men’s team of Ramit Tandon, Saurav Ghosal and Abhay Singh finished at the top of their pool to make it to the semifinals. They blanked Qatar, Pakistan, Kuwait, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei 3-0 in their Pool A matches.

The Indian women’s team finished second in Pool B with two wins and a loss.

While they defeated Iran and Singapore 3-0, the Indian women were defeated 0-3 by Hong Kong, who went on to win the pool. The men faced Malaysia in the semi-finals as well, but won 2-1.

Saurav Ghoshal and Ramit Tandon won their games, while Abhay Singh lost his. This is the first gold medal for the Indian men’s team. The women’s team had won a gold medal in 2012. This year’s bronze medal was their fifth of all time.
