Annu Rani becomes first Indian female javelin thrower to win bronze in CWG

On the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games here on August 7, Annu Rani wrote history by becoming the first Indian woman to earn a medal, a bronze.

In her fourth try to place third, Rani launched the spear 60 metres.

Australia’s Kelsey-Lee Barber, the world champion, beat off compatriot Mackenzie Little (64.27m), who had the lead at the end of the penultimate round, to win the gold with a throw of 64.43 metres in the final round.

Neeraj Chopra, an Olympic winner, and Kashinath Naik, who also won gold in the men’s javelin throw, had won the bronze and gold prior to Rani.

While Chopra took home the gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Olympics, Naik had won the medal at the 2010 Delhi Games.
