The Food Museum: From Meals to Miles – A Culinary Journey!

India’s First Food Museum Launched – FCI, the Food Corporation of India, has launched India’s First Food Museum in the cultural capital of the state Tamil Nadu. The museum is located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, which is also the state’s cultural capital. The FCI Food Museum was created to digitally display the food grain production situation in India and around the world, as well as to emphasize the issues of food storage. FCI in association with Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), Bangalore has been established The museum. This innovative project costs about ₹1.1 crore.

Why Thanjavur, not somewhere else?

Thanjavur was finalized as the location for India’s 1st Food Museum. India has 28 states and thousands of cities but the question arises, that among all these cities and places why Thanjavur of Tamil Nadu has been selected? To Find out the answer of this question we have to go back in 1960’s. The time when FCI opened its first office. Thanjavur the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu was the place where FCI opened its first office on 14th January 1965. This beautiful museum has been constructed on the premises of FCI Divisional Office at Nirmala Nagar in Thanjavur. After completion of 56 years of journey India’s Food Museum has been set up to commemorate the role played by FCI in ensuring food security in the country.

• Foragers’ History: The museum depicts the evolution of agricultural systems for the human, beginning with nomadic hunter-gatherers and ending with settled agricultural producers and farmers, which led to the emergence of civilizations.

• Food Storage: The Food Museum also displays many sorts of food storage methods that have been developed and used in India and around the world over the years. As part of the Museum’s presentation, it also depicts the food grain production scenario in India and around the world, as well as the issues of storage.

• First meal to the last mile:  Another essential component highlighted at the Food Museum is the journey of the food grain from the farm to the consumer’s plate, it also highlights the role of FCI’s in it .

• Operations of the FCI: Through digital presentations, the Food Museum also demonstrates various technical features that the FCI uses to streamline agricultural production and distribution networks. The museum exhibits a variety of technologies such as projection mapping, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), touch screen kiosks, proximity and touch sensors, and virtual reality systems.
