WIRELESS OVER WIRE: PILOT PROJECT TO PROVIDE INTERNET THROUGH ELECTRICITY

Technology is advancing at such a breakneck pace that what was once considered a luxury item has now become a necessity. Technological advancement has made it easy to witness the cars moving on sky or to meet the person on screen residing at the different corner of the world through internet. Engineers and scientists are unceasingly looking for the next big thing they can bring on, from medical advancements to everyday products. With the growing modernization, many technologies have come up to amaze the audience. One such technology the engineers are bringing up to provide the advancement to the rural areas of the country is a pilot project, Wire Less Over.

Potential To Revolutionize the Country’s Internet Sector
The day is not so far, when the internet will be available in every home including rural areas of the country via electric wires. Intel, an American company, is working on a pilot project in India to make this a reality. Considering that most villages have access to electricity, though not to internet via fiber optic cables, this may be a huge boon if it works.
If this technology becomes successful, it has the potential to revolutionize the country’s Internet sector. The villages that have access to the electricity can easily be connected to the internet through this project.

Wow To Rescue Rural Areas Through Internet
According to Nivruti Rai, the head of Intel India, the American company’s Indian subsidiary, this pilot project has been named as Wireless over Wire (Wow). The team is working to provide internet via electric cables. Laying optical fiber in all villages will be very expensive and time-consuming too. Starlink, the company founded by the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, is also working to bring internet to remote areas of the country through satellites.

Challenges of the Project
‘Wherever there is electricity, we can bring affordable data to the village via electric wires,’ Rai explained. Wi-Fi can be used to connect the entire hamlet to the internet. She stated that optical fibre is currently available up to the Panchayat level. The biggest hurdle is to take it from panchayat to village.

How Will The Technology Work?
However, sending data across electrical lines has its own set of difficulties. Intel’s ability to overcome these obstacles remains to be seen. Broadband through power lines is similar to voice and data over telephone lines in terms of idea. Both are segregated into various channels in this. Ordinary phone calls are carried over low-frequency electric signals, while internet data is carried over higher-frequency signals. Though, in order for the technology to be adapted, the power outlet at the receiving site will need to be modified in order to carry new signals.
