Highlights:

  • Dr. Jitendra Singh launches Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven Start-Up by IIT alumni for water purification through innovative technology
  • Dr. Jitendra Singh expressed gratitude to TDB for its financial assistance to Swajal
  • Dr. Vibha Tripathi, the CEO and Co-Founder of Swajal, was asked by the Minister to scale up this technology to help India meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious goal of delivering clean drinking water to all by 2024.

What is in the News?

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister, launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven start-up led by IIT alumni for water purification using cutting-edge technologies. The facility’s goal is to supply safe drinking water at a fraction of the market price.

The Minister remarked that the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven Start-Up initiative should serve as a motivator for other start-ups.

Signing MoU

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between the Technology Development Board (TDB), a statutory entity under the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, and M/s Swajal Water Private Limited, a Gurugram-based tech start-up created by ex-IITians.

Technologies being used

For their project on IoT-enabled point-of-use Solar Water Purification Unit for slums, villages, and High Utility Areas, the firm is concentrating on novel technologies to provide reliable clean drinking water accessible to communities at an affordable price.

Financial assistance

Dr. Jitendra Singh expressed gratitude to TDB for its financial assistance to Swajal and stated that his Ministry is committed to reaching out to small and viable startups with skills and aptitude but little resources.

Delivering clean drinking water to all by 2024

Dr. VibhaTripathi, the CEO and Co-Founder of Swajal, was asked by the Minister to scale up this technology to help India meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious goal of delivering clean drinking water to all by 2024.

Apart from the Centre’s initiatives such as the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) and the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Minister stated that the private sector should come forward in a big way with state-of-the-art tech solutions to cover nearly 14 crore households that do not have access to clean drinking water.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the Ministry of Science and Technology is positively contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vision and Mission of “Har Ghar Nal Se Jal,” referring to the Prime Minister’s 75th Independence Day speech, in which he said that in just two years of the Jal Jeevan Mission, more than four and a half crore families have started getting water from taps.

State-of-the-art Heli-borne survey

In October of last year, Dr. Jitendra Singh and Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, launched state-of-the-art Heli-borne survey technique for groundwater management developed by CSIR-NGRI Hyderabad from Jodhpur. To begin, this current heliborne survey is being conducted in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana.
The patented ‘Clairvoyant’ solution from the Gurugram-based business employs artificial intelligence to optimise purifying systems and detect future malfunctions. As a result, it can manage, upgrade, and repair each system remotely in real time.

Water ATMs

They’ve also created Water ATMs, which combine Internet of Things technology with solar energy to offer clean drinking water. Swajal advocated using solar energy to pump water from rivers, wells, ponds, or groundwater in rural areas, depending on the region.
After that, the water will be treated using the proper technology to make it safe and pure to drink. Purified water may now be purchased for as little as 25 paise per litre thanks to this breakthrough.

Project combines new emerging technologies

Dr. Srivari Chandrashekhar, Secretary of State for Science and Technology and Chairperson of the TDB, explained that this project combines new emerging technologies such as IoT and Artificial Intelligence with renewable solar energy to meet the need for clean drinking water in villages and remote areas.

Covering the other states

“A social impact start-up like Swajal might do wonders with the financial support of the Technology Development Board.” Dr. VibhaTripathi, Swajal’s CEO and Co-Founder, stated, “We are looking forward to covering other states in India as soon as possible.”
