What is in the News?

The Delhi government plans to start redeveloping, landscaping, and beautifying the city. The national capital’s highways will be beautified to the tune of 540 kilometres.

Concerning the project

• The initiative will see the roads in the country’s capital renovated to European standards, which means 30 metres or more. The initiative will also improve pedestrian safety on the roads.
• The project will balance the roads so that transit vehicles, bikers, and pedestrians may all travel safely.
• Hybrid Annuity Mode will be used to implement the project. It will be implemented by the Delhi Public Welfare Department.
• The government will fund 60 percent of the project’s cost to the entities in charge of its implementation. The remaining balance will be paid in thirty bi-annual payments in hybrid annual mode. The agencies would also be responsible for the upkeep of these roadways.

What is the strategy?

Nine experts have been hired by Delhi’s Public Welfare Department. These consultants will provide streetscape advice to the government. The consultants will also analyse the data, research traffic trends, and propose solutions. They will also ensure that the roads are long-lasting and that they are built in an equal manner.

What is the purpose of the project?

The national capital has the highest incidence of fatal accidents , according to the Centre for Science and Environment. On a daily basis, five people die in Delhi as a result of traffic accidents. This is due to the fact that road width varies throughout the city. Furthermore, in certain areas, the extra space along the roadside is not adequately utilized.

Significance of the project

Each road in the capital is distinct and unique. Roads will be realigned as part of the project. It will give pedestrians the same amount of space. The scheme will include separate cycle lanes on all Delhi highways. Toilets, water coolers, green areas, rainwater harvesting systems, libraries, street furniture, e-rickshaws, and last-mile connectivity will all be included in the project.
