Kerala launches ‘Pride’ project to empower transgender community, creating employment

Kerala government has taken a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and empowerment with the launch of the “Pride” project. Aimed at providing employment opportunities to transgender individuals in innovative sectors, this initiative is a collaborative effort between the Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission and the Department of Social Justice. With a vision to ensure their active participation in the scientific employment sector, the project aims to tackle the unemployment and invisibility challenges faced by the transgender community.

Kerala’s Commitment to Equality

In an official announcement on social media, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the civil and human rights of all individuals, including transgender people. The “Pride” project is a testament to this commitment, offering a supportive framework for the transgender community to overcome unemployment issues and gain better job opportunities, thus enhancing their social visibility and acceptance.

Empowering through Employment

The “Pride” project aligns with Kerala’s broader objective of providing employment to 20 lakh individuals by 2026. Candidates with basic educational qualifications up to Class 12, as well as those proficient in scientific professions, will receive training and be placed in diverse sectors. By focusing on the scientific employment sector, the initiative aims to empower and uplift the marginalized transgender community, offering them meaningful avenues for economic independence and social inclusion.

Implementation and Expansion

In its initial phase, the project has already seen 382 registrations through the Digital Workforce Management System (DWMS) of the knowledge mission. These individuals will benefit from the employment opportunities provided. Additionally, the Social Justice department plans to include 1628 more beneficiaries in the upcoming phases.

Through these strategic steps, the project intends to gradually eliminate unemployment among transgender individuals and enhance their quality of life by fostering social acceptance and integration.

Building a Dignified Future

CM Pinarayi Vijayan expressed the government’s unwavering support for the transgender community, emphasizing their right to live with dignity and confidence. By addressing the challenges of unemployment and invisibility, the “Pride” project aims to transform the lives of transgender individuals, equipping them with the tools and opportunities needed to thrive in society. This initiative is a resounding message that the government stands shoulder to shoulder with the transgender community, championing their rights and facilitating a more inclusive and accepting society.
