India’s Govt. Panel Proposes Ban on Diesel Cars by 2027

India, one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, has set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. To achieve this goal, an oil ministry panel has recommended banning the use of diesel-powered four-wheeler vehicles by 2027 in cities with more than a million people and polluted towns. The panel also suggests switching to electric and gas-fuelled vehicles to reduce emissions.

Push for Renewable Energy

India aims to produce 40% of its electricity from renewable sources, as part of its plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. This shift towards renewable energy is a significant step towards reducing India’s carbon footprint and combating climate change.

Incentives for Electric Vehicle Adoption

To promote the adoption of electric vehicles, the panel suggests extending incentives given under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles scheme (FAME) beyond March 31. This would encourage the development and production of electric vehicles, making them more accessible and affordable to consumers.

Transition to Gas-Fuelled Vehicles

The panel also recommends the use of gas-fuelled vehicles, such as trucks and buses, as a transition fuel for 10-15 years. The use of gas-powered vehicles could significantly reduce emissions and provide a cleaner alternative to diesel-powered vehicles.

Conclusion

The proposed ban on diesel cars and the push towards renewable energy and gas-fuelled vehicles is a significant step towards reducing emissions and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The implementation of these measures would benefit the environment, the economy, and the health of India’s citizens, making it a crucial step towards a sustainable future.
