- A road made of steel trash has been built in the Hazira Industrial Area in Surat, Gujarat.
- The cost of its construction will also be lowered by roughly 30%.
- This novel approach is thought to be capable of preventing road damage during the rainy season.
Nineteen million tonnes of steel trash is produced each year by various factories around the nation. This trash usually ends up in landfills. Now soon it may find a use! To utilize the unused resource with a lot more benefits, India has got its first steel road.
A road made of steel trash has been built in the Hazira Industrial Area in Surat, Gujarat. The new steel road is believed to be much more durable than the traditional ones. The highways and other roads would grow stronger as a result of this trial. Moreover, the cost will also be lowered by roughly 30%.
The initiative also uses the Clean India and Waste to Wealth campaigns of the Indian government. The project is co-sponsored by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), with assistance from the Ministry of Steel and Policy Commission, as well as the NITI Aayog.
India’s First Steel Road: To prevent road damage during rainy reason
The one-kilometer-long pilot project road includes six lanes. It is built entirely of processed steel aggregate and serves as an alternative to traditional materials. The thickness of the road has also been lowered by 30%, according to CSRI. This new steel road is believed to be capable of preventing road damage during the rainy season.
India’s First Steel Road: More durable than the traditional roads
“This 1-kilometer-long road at Hazira Port in Gujarat was previously in bad shape due to trucks carrying several tonnes of weight,” CRRI Principal Scientist Satish Pandey said. Further, he added, however, under a trial, this road was made entirely from steel waste, and now more than 1,000 trucks, 18 to 30 per day, pass with tonnes of weight, but the road remains the same.
