Who was Rosa Bonheur?

Rosa Bonheur inherited her creative abilities from her father, a minor landscape painter. Rosa Bonheur’s art influenced a new generation of female artists. She primarily painted animals, sketching them out beforehand before painting them on canvas. In the 1840s, she built a name for herself as a realist animal painter and sculptor. Between 1841 and 1853, her works were displayed at the famed Paris Salon.

Her picture, ‘Plowing in Nivernais,’ was exhibited in 1849, establishing her as a professional artist. It is now on display in France’s National Museum of the Palace of Fontainebleau.

In 1865, French Empress Eugénie bestowed the Legion of Honor upon her. The prize is one of the most coveted in the country.
