Arunima Sinha, born on July 20, 1989, faced adversity from a young age. Hailing from Lucknow, her father served in the Indian Army, and her mother worked in the health department. Boarding the Padmavati Express to Delhi for a CISF exam, Arunima faced a harrowing experience. A group of robbers disrupted her journey, attempting to snatch her belongings. Choosing not to be a passive victim, Arunima bravely fought back, inciting the robbers’ rage. In a brutal retaliation, she was pushed off the speeding train, leaving her injured and vulnerable on the tracks.
Alone and bleeding heavily, Arunima faced a nightmarish ordeal. Rats on the railway tracks added to her suffering by chewing on her injured leg. Shouting for help went unanswered, and she lost consciousness. Discovered by villagers the next morning, she was rushed to the hospital.
The Comeback Spirit
Despite severe injuries, doctors were forced to amputate one leg below the knee. Arunima, confined to a hospital bed, found inspiration in cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s journey. Determined to overcome her challenges, she set an audacious goal – to conquer Mount Everest.
Reaching out to Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest, Arunima shared her ambitious dream. Pal, impressed by Arunima’s spirit, encouraged her to show the world that she had already conquered the mountain within herself. Arunima joined the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and TATA Steel Adventure, taking her first steps towards the seemingly impossible goal.
Conquering Mount Everest
In less than two years, Arunima, accompanied by Sherpa Neema Kancha, embarked on her journey to Mount Everest. The ascent was challenging; she encountered the sight of dead bodies, but Arunima refused to give up.
On May 21, 2013, after 52 days of relentless effort, she reached the summit, making history as the world’s first female amputee to conquer Mount Everest.
