Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur, a significant figure in Bihar politics, has been posthumously honored with the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award, on the eve of his birth anniversary. 

Popularly known as the “Jan Nayak” or people’s hero, Thakur served as Bihar’s Chief Minister twice and left an indelible mark on Indian politics. 

Karpoori Thakur was born on January 24, 1924, in a village in Samistupur district. The village was later renamed ‘Karpuri Gram’ in his honor. Belonging to the Nai samaj (barber society), Thakur’s humble beginnings shaped his outlook on social justice and equality. Despite numerous challenges, he achieved remarkable feats for societal betterment.
