Meta Launches Muse AI Agent in the US: Automated Shopping, Travel Booking, and Multi-Step Task Capabilities

Technology giant Meta has officially unveiled its new autonomous personal AI assistant, Muse. Moving far beyond traditional conversational chatbots that simply generate text or answer basic questions, Muse is designed as an action-oriented agentic AI. It can independently execute complex digital workflows, compose and dispatch emails, manage busy schedules, and handle online shopping on behalf of its users.

Currently rolled out exclusively to users in the United States, the service operates through a standalone application as well as WhatsApp, with future plans to integrate the system directly into Meta’s line of smart glasses.

Advanced Architecture and Cloud-Based Operations

At the core of the system lies Meta’s newly developed Muse Spark multimodal reasoning model. Unlike traditional generative models that require step-by-step user prompts, Muse Spark processes a broad objective, formulates a logical execution strategy, and executes each phase autonomously.

To maintain continuous operational capability without draining mobile battery life, every active Muse session runs inside a dedicated Muse Secure Virtual Machine (VM) hosted in the cloud. This isolated environment allows the agent to navigate external websites, complete multi-field forms, process large documents, and monitor live updates in the background, even when the user closes the app or locks their smartphone screen.

Comprehensive Capabilities and Real-World Applications

  • Automated E-Commerce: Muse streamlines online shopping by comparing product prices across retail websites, tracking inventory discounts, generating customized grocery lists from saved recipe files, and completing online checkouts. Financial transactions are securely authorized through Link by Stripe utilizing single-use virtual cards to protect primary credit card details.
  • Travel and Logistics Management: The agent simplifies complex travel planning by searching flight itineraries, monitoring hotel room availability, compiling daily schedules, and organizing bookings based on personalized individual preferences.
  • Email and Calendar Integration: By connecting directly to user email platforms and digital calendars, Muse drafts routine message replies, accepts or declines event invites, sends outbound emails, and coordinates meeting times with external contacts.
  • Persistent Memory: Built with long-term memory integration, Muse retains personal preferences, dietary restrictions, and travel habits across different sessions, eliminating the need for users to repeatedly input baseline information.

Robust Privacy Controls and Security Standards

Because an autonomous AI agent interacts with sensitive personal data and payment mechanisms, Meta has embedded strict security protocols and permission frameworks into the platform:

  1. Explicit Permission Gates: Muse cannot complete high-impact actions, such as processing a payment transaction or sending an email to an external party, without explicit user confirmation.
  2. Granular Access Control: Users retain full control over individual app permissions. For instance, a user can grant Muse read-only access to their calendar while strictly prohibiting it from modifying or sending emails.
  3. Comprehensive Audit Logs: The platform features a detailed activity log showing completed tasks, current actions, and scheduled next steps. Users can inspect this log at any time to pause, alter, or cancel active tasks mid-operation.

The Future of Autonomous AI Assistance

The debut of Muse marks a major shift in consumer technology from passive AI assistance to proactive digital agency.

By delegating time-consuming online chores, scheduling logistics, and administrative communication to an intelligent background agent, Meta aims to redefine how users interact with everyday software and digital services.
