On March 9, 2022, Shri Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Labour and Employment, as well as Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change, presented a book titled “Role of Labour in India’s Development” in New Delhi. The book features 12 papers on the role of labour in India’s growth authored by notable academics and practitioners.
The V V Giri National Labour Institute has produced this book as part of the ‘Iconic Week’ of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,’ which is commemorating India’s 75th year of independence.
All about V V Giri National Labour Institute
It is a civil service training institute that provides labour administrators, public sector managers, and other government officials involved in labour with training.
It also conducts labour research and holds seminars, workshops, and lectures on labor-related topics on a regular basis.
It collaborates with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi to offer M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. It is a self-contained organisation within the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
It was known as the National Labour Institute until 1995. It was later renamed in honour of V.V. Giri, a well-known union leader and former President of India.
The following are the members of the institute’s General Council:
The President is the Union Minister for Labour and Employment. Members include representatives from the central government, employers’ and workers’ organisations, MPs, and others who have made significant contributions to the subject of labour.
The executive council is elected by the General Council, and the Employment Secretary serves as its chairperson. The Director-General is the institute’s administrative head.
