India’s Metro To Become World’s Second-Biggest Network, Here’s Why

India’s metro network is rapidly expanding, and it is on track to surpass the United States, becoming the world’s second-largest metro network in the coming years. Let’s delve into the reasons behind this remarkable growth.

Current Status of India’s Metro Network

As of now, India’s metro network spans approximately 911.48 kilometres across 17 metro systems and 38 lines. While it currently ranks third globally in terms of metro railway network operations, India is poised for significant expansion. In the next 2-3 years, India aims to add approximately 950 kilometres to its metro network, surpassing the United States and securing the second position globally.

The Transformative Journey

During a recent event in Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir, Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, shed light on India’s transformative journey in metro connectivity over the past decade. The evolution of technology has connected various areas, making it possible for people to commute efficiently.

India’s Ambitious Expansion Plans

In the next 2-3 years, India’s metro network is expected to expand by approximately 950 kilometers. This expansion will propel India ahead of the United States, securing its position as the second-largest metro network globally. The current rankings are as follows:

China: China leads the way with a metro network spanning 9,827.5 kilometers, including 47 metro systems and 281 metro lines.

United States of America (USA): The USA holds the second spot with a network of 1,386.2 kilometers and 16 metro systems spread across 87 lines.

India: While India is still behind China and the USA, its extensive expansion plans will soon elevate it to the second position.

India’s Economic Progress

Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized that India’s development cannot happen without the progress of Kashmir. He also highlighted India’s economic growth, revealing that until the Battle of Plassey in 1707, India’s share in the global GDP was 25% or more. Despite being considered a fragile economy in 2014, India has since become one of the top five economies worldwide.

Urban Transportation Efficiency

India’s commitment to efficient urban transportation is evident through its investment in metro infrastructure. As cities expand and populations increase, reliable and convenient public transport becomes crucial. The metro system not only reduces traffic congestion but also promotes sustainable travel options.

Conclusion

India’s metro network expansion is a testament to its commitment to fostering connectivity, growth, and efficient urban transportation. As the country continues to invest in metro infrastructure, it is well on its way to becoming the world’s second-largest metro network.
