HIGHLIGHTS:

  • It will be on exhibit in Jaisalmer in Longewala, near the India-Pakistan border.
  • Longewala was the epicentre of India's and Pakistan's historic conflict in 1971.
  • It will be the Khadi flag's fifth public appearance.

To commemorate "Army Day" on January 15, 2022, the world's largest national flag, made of Khadi fabric, will be displayed.

About the Monumental National Flag

The 225-foot-long and 150-foot-wide Monumental National Flag is the largest in the country. It weighs in at over 1400 kilograms. This flag was made in 49 days by 70 khadi artists. Its production has resulted in an additional 3500 man-hours of work for Khadi artists and related workers. The flag was made from 4500 meters of hand-woven, hand-spun Khadi cotton bunting. It has a total surface area of 33,750 square feet. The Ashok Chakra in the flag is 30 feet in circumference.

The flag is being shown for the fifth time

After being launched in Leh on October 2, this will be the fifth public display of the National Flag. It was then shown at Hindon Airbase on October 8, 2021, to commemorate Air Force Day, and at Red Fort on October 21, 2021, to commemorate the completion of 100 crore Covid-19 vaccines across India. On December 4, 2021, it was also shown at the Naval Dockyard near the Gateway of India in Mumbai to commemorate Navy Day.

Who came up with the idea for the flat?

The flag was created by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) to commemorate the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.' KVIC has handed over the flag to the Defence Forces, who will display it in conspicuous locations on significant events.

Commission for Khadi and Village Industries (KVIC)

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act of 1956 established KVIC as a statutory organization in April 1957. It is a ministry-run organization that focuses on micro, small, and medium businesses. In collaboration with other rural development agencies, the organization aims to plan, promote, organize, facilitate, and help in the construction and growth of khadi and village industries across rural areas.
