ASIAN ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS: ARVIND SINGH WINS GOLD, INDIA FINISH WITH SIX MEDALS

At the continental tournament in Thailand, Indian rowers took home two gold medals and four silver medals. India’s total of six medals was one more than in the previous event.
On the final day of the Asian Rowing Championships 2021 in Thailand, Indian rower Arvind Singh won gold in the men’s lightweight single sculls.

Arvind Singh’s performance and achievement
Arvind Singh an Indian Rower as well as serving in Indian Army won the event in timing 7.55.942 at the Royal Thai Navy Rowing Center in Rayong, finishing significantly ahead of his nearest competitor, Sobirjon Safaroliyev of Uzbekistan, who finished in 7.58.397. Weichun Chen of China won bronze with a timing of 8.10.043.
This is the 25-year-old Tokyo Olympian’s second consecutive Asian Championships medal. At the previous continental meet, Arvind Singh had won silver in the men’s lightweight double sculls.
On 12th December 2021, Indian rowers won three more silver medals, giving them a total of six medals from the continental championships – two gold and four silver.

Indian performance in Asian Rowling Championship
From December 8 to 12, the Asian Rowing Championship 2021 was held in Ban Chang, Rayong, Thailand. At the continental event, India has 16 rowers competing in six divisions, led by Tokyo 2020 Olympians Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh. India won five medals in the Asian Rowing Championships in 2019: one gold, two silver, and two bronze.

Different players , different categories
 • Men’s lightweight double sculls
With a timing of 7:12.568 in the men’s lightweight double sculls, Ashish Phugat and Sukhjinder Singh took silver. They placed 3.401 seconds behind China’s Qing Li and Weichun Chen, and Thailand’s Siwakorn Wongpin and Nawamin Deenoi were third and fourth, respectively.
 • The quadruple sculls
Meanwhile, the quartet of Bittu Singh, Jakar Khan, Manjeet Kumar, and Sukhmeet Singh won silver in the quadruple sculls with a time of 6.33.083. In a photo-finish, they were beaten by Uzbekistan by 0.523 seconds.
 • Coxless fours
Jasveer Singh, Punit Kumar, Gurmeet Singh, and Charanjeet Singh won silver in the men’s coxless fours with a time of 6:51.661. Meanwhile, Indian women rowers will leave the Asian championships empty-handed.
 • Quadruple sculls
After a creditable second-place result in the heats, Khushpreet Kaur, Navneet Kaur, Mrunmayee Salgaonkar, and Avinash Kaur finished fifth in the finals of quadruple sculls. Rukmani and Reshma Kumari Minz finished fifth in the lightweight double sculls as well.

Arvind Singh’s Tokyo Olympics partner Arjun Lal Jat, who was paired with Ravi this time, won gold in the men’s double sculls event on Saturday.
Parminder Singh, who was competing for the first time at an international level, won silver in the men’s single sculls. For the Thailand meet, India has fielded 16 rowers representing six different categories.
