Lucknow G20 meet: Eye care via WhatsApp

People in rural areas frequently have eye problems, but their problems worsen due to a lack of timely doctor’s advice and treatment. Keeping this in mind, Logy.AI, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled healthcare platform, has created an AI and WhatsApp-based system that will aid in the detection of eye diseases such as cataract. This new technology mode was recently on display at the G20 summit in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

How it works?

In such a case, any health worker can easily diagnose these patients’ eye disease by taking a photo of their eye with WhatsApp.

As a result, the patient can go to the doctor, get advice, and seek treatment. Ghosh went on to say that the system was developed in 2021 and is now operational in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha, with 1,100 people having been screened thus far.

According to Logi.AI Director Nivedita Tiwari, the application has been linked with WhatsApp because it is accessible to almost everyone, and the app will be launched later.

She explained that the contact is distributed to users by adding it to WhatsApp. A WhatsApp bot obtains basic patient information such as name, gender, and so on.

Following the information exchange, the patient, who is guided by the bot, must send a photograph of the affected eye.

The bot analyses the image and informs the patient whether they have a cataract and whether it is mature or of lesser severity. Following that, the patient can receive medications and, if necessary, surgery from the doctor. The entire procedure is automated.

Healthcare data is used to create this technology. The method of testing is similar to that of a doctor and 91 per cent accuracy was achieved in its trial done with about 100 patients. Terming the initiative as a great thing for remote areas, Bhargav said that the people in the block are being made aware and the patient is tracked from there to be operated upon by the doctors.
