Memories from The World of Sports in 2022

In this fast-moving world, many happenings take place in just a short period. The fields of businesses and technology are the industries where the most decisions take place within a prick of time. So do the fields of entertainment and sports. The year 2022 has been significant for everyone but majorly for the fans of sports who love to stick to that sofa and continue to stare at the television screens with jaws dropped and popped-out eyes. The year 2022 brought several events and incidents in the world of sports with the Fifa World Cup taking place also in the same year. Many life-changing happenings took place in the same year. While the famous weightlifter Mirabai Chanu returned to the World Championship, on the other and, was Nikhat Zareen, who became the new Indian face in boxing.

Lakshya Sen setting for the All England finals in Birmingham and Neeraj Chopra achieving the gold medal in the Diamond League, what else did the year 2022 not offer? Here is a flashback to what 2022 gave the fans in the world of sports.

Kohli also got a handful of sky

In 2022, Virat Kohli both regained his form as well as put a drought of three points by scoring a century in the Asia Cup. The match was against Afghanistan and it was not as emotional as a moment for the fans of cricket. The most emotional moment for the cricket fans was when India had to play a match against Pakistan in the World Cup and Team India played a losing match on the strengths of Kohli.

When everyone thought that India would lose the match, Virat Kohli scored 82 off 53 balls to score an unforgettable victory. As soon as Ashwin took a single at the last ball, Virat Kohli celebrated the victory by sitting on the ground. During this, his eyes were moist with tears.

Kohli was interviewed with moist eyes during the presentation. He won that match in such conditions that no one could have ever won.

Mirabai Chanu returned to the World Championships for the silver medal after she retained the CWG gold

The 28-year-old weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu, tried to improve her weakness in snatch. With the start of an overwhelming and exciting favorite sport in Birmingham, the Tokyo silver medallist, Mirabai Chanu, lifted 201 kilograms with a snatch of 88kg and a clean and jerk of 113 kilograms to set the new Commonwealth Games record. This was her third medal and she also won a second gold in the quadrennial event. The Commonwealth Games expectedly saw medals in galore for Indian lifters with Bindyarani Devi, Sanket Sagar, and Vikash Thakur, also joining the group with silver medals to their name while a further four settled for the bronze. It was the tournament of the season for Mirabai as she had faced two of her superior rivals Chinese duo Jiang Huihua and Hiu Zhihua at the event, and her task was made tougher for her by a recurring injury. The latest performance was limited to her lifting ability of 200 kilograms but it was enough to take home a silver medal because the Olympic champion, Zhihua, skipped her final lift in clean and jerk and settled settle for the bronze. The proud Indian came back home with an additional back injury that forced her to go into recovery mode for a month.

Nikhat Zareen gets recognized as the new face of Indian boxing

However, Indian boxing ended the year 2022 with a smile on the face of all Indians as Nikhat Zareen ultimately proved that she is not all about talks and ‘no action’ after her controversies with Mary Kom. This 26-year-old girl from Nizamabad won her maiden World Championship Gold medal that has become the fifth Indian World Champion and the first since the 2018 triumph of Mary Kom. Zareen carried that form to Birmingham as well as for her maiden Commonwealth Games success that affirmed her status as the new queen of Indian boxing.

Wrestlers Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat deliver their performances on the big stage

In the Asian Championships in April, Ulaanbaatar turned out to be the curtain raiser with Vinesh Phogat missing. Bajrang Punia with 65 kilograms and Deepak Punia with 86 kilograms took silver back home. This was Bajrang’s fourth silver winning at the event and has already been the champion twice in past events. It came through Vinesh and Bajrang, who had used their years of international experience to win the medals. For Vinesh, this was the second bronze at the apex wrestling tournament, while for Bajrang, it can be counted as a historic winning of the fourth medal at Worlds, with the biggest being a solitary winning of the silver in 2018 Budapest.

Lakshya Sen comes out of the trend and reaches All England for silver

Lakshya Sen was becoming a disappointment with the lack of success among the big boys very rapidly. All this had been changed this year when Sen won his first BWF title in the Indian Open in March and then defeated the Olympic Champion Viktor Axelsen in the German Open right after to reach another final. This 22-year-old shuttler then took off all the hurdles and obstructions to reach the prestigious All-England final in Birmingham the next week. Despite this straight-set loss to Axelsen in the final, Sen always knew that he had it in him and that was the very evidence at the Thomas Cup in May.

Neeraj became the first Indian to win the gold medal at the Diamond League

Neeraj Chopra, the Golden Boy of India, again won the hearts of the people of India. He is the first Indian to win the gold medal at the Diamond League. His best throw was 88.44 meters. Though Neeraj suffered many injuries in 2022, he was amazing when he was on the field. Neeraj didn’t make a good start at the beginning of the tournament but later made excellent scores and in the end, won the game.
After going through all these, fans of sports would cherish the memories of the year 2022 because this is what this year has left for us. Memories, nostalgia, laughter and tears, and what not? One can only remember what this year has offered and can remember them in the days to come. And this is not just the case of sports, this is concerning all other industries where the year 2022 has left marks and invited new challenges in the days to come. This, the story of the human race goes on and continues every day with new sets of events and incidents, new sets of emotions to offer the people, and new sets of memories and challenges one needs to face in the days to come.
