Government intends to rename Rajpath and Central Vista lawns as Kartavya Path

The Rajpath and Central Vista lawns will be renamed as Kartavya Path by the government. According to sources, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will hold a special meeting on September 7 (Wednesday) to adopt the new name.

On September 8 evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the renovated Rajpath and Central Vista lawns. Kartavya Path will encompass the entire road and area from the Netaji statue to the Rashtrapati Bhavan. According to sources, this is also a message to the ruling class that the era of rulers and subjects is coming to an end.

Earlier, the name of the road on which PM’s residence is located was also changed from Race Course Road to Lok Kalyan Marg. In his most recent speech on August 15, Modi emphasised the abolition of symbols associated with the colonial mindset. In the run-up to 2047, he also emphasised the importance of duties. According to sources, both of these factors can be seen in the naming of ‘Kartavya Path.’

According to the Central Government’s dedicated Central Vista website, the Central Vista Avenue includes the Rajpath and India Gate lawns. Prior to independence, Rajpath was known as King’s Way.

Sources said there is no official name such as ‘Central Vista Avenue’ in government records, but it was conceptualised as a project as part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan. The government submitted records of the CVA in the Supreme Court in 2020 and the Delhi Urban Art Commission, in its records, referred to the area as CVA in 2021.
