Goa govt. to implement free cylinders scheme from June end

By the end of June, the Goa government will begin implementing a scheme that would offer three free cooking gas cylinders to those living below the poverty line (BPL), according to Rural Development Agency Minister Govind Gaude. He said that providing free LPG cylinders was part of the ruling BJP’s election agenda.

Households with income less than Rs 4 Lakh per annum will be included in scheme

The scheme would be extended to households with a total yearly income of less than Rs 4 lakh in the second phase. According to Gaude, 37,000 BPL households would be covered by this scheme, which will see money put straight into their bank accounts at the end of the current fiscal year.

We’ll look into how many cylinders they’ve taken. Every family, on average, uses six cylinders every year. The minister stated, “We will be reimbursing their money for three cylinders.”

Beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will receive subsidy of $200

Separately, the Central government announced this month that beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will receive a subsidy of $200 each gas cylinder (up to 12 cylinders). The Centre made cooking gas subsidy limited only to the 9 crore poor women and other beneficiaries who had received LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme.

Current price of cylinder

Currently, the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi is ₹1,003. And, under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, beneficiaries will get ₹200 subsidy directly in their bank account. That means, Ujjwala beneficiaries only have to pay ₹803 on their purchase of a 14.2 kg cylinder. According to the government, ₹200 subsidy on LPG gas cylinders will cost the government ₹6,100 crore.
